Afghan Adjustment Act (AAA)

Throughout 2022, ANAR spearheaded a series of phone banks and community education sessions and created tool kits for impacted community members and allies to engage in legislative advocacy with a focus on the Afghan Adjustment Act. The Afghan Adjustment Act was a bipartisan bill that would offer newly arrived Afghans a pathway to permanent status here in the U.S. It has been reintroduced multiple times in Congress but yet to pass. Under the Trump administration, community members remain vulnerable and have faced increasing barriers and challenges to permanent status and family reunification.

At-risk and newly arrived Afghans remain in need of pathways to permanent status and reunification with their loved ones. Afghans were up against a deadline to file their asylum applications. The AAA would both follow historical precedent and alleviate the burden on legal service providers and Afghans themselves, who have otherwise had to undergo the backlogged and re-traumatizing asylum process, redirecting resources that could instead focus on resettling refugees who remain outside of the U.S.
