Five years after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the United States still owes protection to thousands of Afghans— many of whom are left vulnerable to deportation despite creating a home in our communities for over half a decade. Now, our Afghan friends and family are left in abeyance without immigration status while they face asylum and other immigration backlogs and endless policy changes. Congress has the power to offer relief and keep the government’s promise to Afghans by passing legislation to offer Temporary Protected Status, protecting our Afghan community members from deportation while they work to access a more durable, permanent status here.
